Plus Size + Pregnant

[Plus Size + Pregnant] MATERNITY CLOTHES

June 10, 2015

It’s still early days in my pregnancy (I am little over 19 weeks along), and am only slightly showing, but I am already looking into what clothes I can wear (or buy to wear) for when I get bigger. There really are very minimal Plus Size Maternity options out there — and most of them are bleh. Like most pregnant women (no matter the size) you want to be able to buy “normal” clothes as much as possible instead of actual “maternity” clothes. Here is my current guide to Plus Size Maternity.

MY MATERNITY “UNIFORM”

In reality, thus far, my maternity “uniform” hasn’t varied greatly from my regular comfy/every day “uniform.” We will see if this will last the farther along I get — maybe just get the same thing in bigger sizes?

1. Yoga Pants (Plus Size / ‘Reg’ Size  to XXL / PS Maternity): I generally wear these with the waistband unfolded to make them high waist. They are comfortable and help smooth out the belly area.

2. Over-sized Tank Tops (Plus Size / ‘Reg’ Size to XXL / Maternity to XXL): Before being pregnant, I wore more fitted tank tops. Now, I have been buying over-sized or “boyfriend” fit ones to leave room for my belly to grow.

3. Knit Maxi Dresses (Stripe Basic – Plus Size):  I’ve already stocked up a bunch of knit maxi dresses, with a fuller skirt, and in a slightly larger size to leave room for growth. I own this exact dress in black/white and red/white stripe.

4. Over-sized V-Neck T-Shirts (Plus Size / ‘Reg’ Size to XXL / Maternity to XXL): Another basic that I have always gravitated towards and have invested in a larger size for pregnancy. I’m thinking I may eventually have to invest in some maternity versions or larger plus size versions.

THE MATERNITY MAXI

Who doesn’t love a maxi when they’re pregnant (be it plus size or non). Here are a few great options I have found recently that would work good with being plus size and pregnant (some are regular plus size and others maternity plus size).

1. Red Stripe Maxi Maternity Dress – Plus  (JC Penney)

2. Plus Size Black Maxi Dress  (Target)

3. Damask Plus Size Maternity Maxi Dress  (Pink Blush)

4. Mixed Print Maxi Dress Plus Size  (Forever 21+)

5.  Plus Size Black Stripe Maternity Dress  (Destination Maternity)

6.  Turquoise Short Sleeve Maternity Maxi Dress – Plus  (JC Penney)

ONLINE PLUS SIZE MATERNITY

  • Old Navy Maternity: Old Navy doesn’t offer plus size maternity, but their online offerings go up to XXL and Old Navy has always been known to run on the large size.

  • Target/Liz Lange Maternity: This line also does not come in plus size, but it does go to size 18 and XXL. These sizes seem to run larger than most of Target’s clothing lines. I already have purchased a pair of maternity jeans in store in a size 18, and they fit perfect and are very comfortable. The ‘Liz Lange’ line is also available in store.

  • Asos Maternity: Again, another one that does not offer plus size maternity, but they do go up to size 16 (US).

  • Pink Blush Plus Size Maternity:  This is the first web site that has a “plus size maternity” section where the items are actualy really cute! If I end up buying more than basics  in maternity, I definitely will try them! Size XL-3X.

  • Destination Motherhood:  (Also same site as ‘Motherhood Maternity‘) This site has a decent amount of offerings and a pretty extensive amount of different types of offerings. A good amount of options when it comes to maternity jeans, pants, and shorts. Sizes come in 1X-3X.

PLUS SIZE + PREGNANT: The Beginning

May 29, 2015

plus_size_pregnant

At the beginning of May I announced my pregnancy on here. (Yay!) Since I first found out I was pregnant, I’ve wanted to write about what it’s like to be plus size and going through a pregnancy. This is the first in a number of posts I want to write about my experience of being plus size and pregnant (in a series entitled, “Plus Size + Pregnant”). Some things are very different for plus size gals and others are the same at any size. It also varies for each plus size women. Added to health issues that some heavier women have when pregnant, there are a lot of self esteem, self image, etc. issues that pop up anew when you find a little one is on the way.

My baby was a (happy) surprise. When I found out I was pregnant, it was a shock (to say the least!). Along with the shock, I also had so many fears and worries (occurring from the crazy hormones and just natural worry).  I want to share some of initial fears and my actual experiences, thus far:

1. Fat Shaming From Doctor

Since I was a little chubby girl going to the doctor and being lectured on how fat I was, I’ve had this fear of being shamed whenever I go to the doctors. It is mainly irrational and partly valid. Becoming pregnant increased  this fear and it was some what overwhelming, I was afraid of what my doctor would say during my first prenatal appointment.

My fears ended up being unfounded, because my doctor was nothing but kind, straight forward, and had a good bed side manner.  She hasn’t made my weight be an issue and has focused on the fact that overall my baby and myself are healthy (which is most important).

If you are pregnant and have a doctor that does not make you feel comfortable and at ease — please consider finding a new one. At this special time in your life, you need a special doctor.

2. Fat + Pregnant = Horrible Health Issues

Don’t get me wrong, being plus size can add a lot of health issues when you are pregnant, but it can also not. You can also be super thin and healthy and end up with issues (hello genetics!). I was worried that this would be my case (high blood pressure, insane weight gain, etc.), but, so far, I’ve been good. Normal blood pressure, normal weight gain… Just a “normal” gal so far (*knock on wood*).

3. Weight Gain

Right before getting pregnant, I was probably at the healthiest I had been in a long time. At the New Year I had begun doing  a Whole 30 journey. I was eating super healthy, I had lost quite a few inches, and had even lost about 7-8 pounds — I was doing so good and feeling so good. So, two months after starting this program, finding out I was pregnant threw a wrench into this.

At this point, I couldn’t stand to eat anymore eggs, meat, or veggies. The only thing I could stand eating was fast food, junkie food, and sweets. I really wanted to be healthy for my baby, but I couldn’t handle the healthy food. This really made me worry about my weight gain. I was already heavy and I was scared I’d gain weight like crazy. But, the truth is, usually the heavier you are the less likely you are to gain as much weight. Since I had some food aversions and nausea, I even lost a pound or two at first. After this I have gained a few pounds, but nothing crazy. My doctor claims I will end up gaining about 15-20 pounds total (including baby, placenta, etc.). This is still a worry, but I’ve been trying to work on not worrying about it too much.

(Please note: I am not a medical professional, these are simply my experiences with being plus size and pregnant.)
