Bay Area

Hello World!

May 27, 2012

Hi! I’m Laurel— I am the “Elle/L” behind The Curvy Elle. I am a 20-something, Californian born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area transplanted to New York City. I am a plus size or “curvy” girl who is living (and working!) in a world of size zeros.

I am currently following my dream—living and working as an Assistant Fashion Designer for a wholesale clothing company that has production right here in the good ol’ U S of A. We make Junior and Junior Plus clothing.

I did my undergrad schooling in NYC, but had the luck of graduating right when the market crashed. I had a hard time getting started in the Fashion Industry, so when I had a job offer back home I took it. I spent the next 2 years working and going back to Grad School. I have a restless heart, so when my feet started twitching I knew it was time for a change. From the day I left New York I knew it was just a matter of time until I came back.

Last September I moved back to New York to intern in Fashion Design and look for work. I spent about 6 months doing a multitude of internships and odd jobs until I was hired as an Assistant at my current position. I have been in it for the long haul. Now that I am settled in my job I want to add something new to my life.

Working in an industry that is so focused on appearance, it has definitely made it extra hard for me being plus sized. It takes guts of steal and strong self worth to make it. It may sound cliche, but I really want to make a difference in such a superficial industry. I want to show that there is substance out there and a large market for the “Curvy” woman.

This is how I came up with the idea of The Curvy Elle Blog and Vintage Shop. With this blog, I intend to show how trends can be translated for the Plus Size Woman and give ideas for creative ways to dress yourself. I have also dedicated my shop to sell my vintage finds for that woman. Ultimately, I have a general idea of what I want to do with this blog and shop, but I know that it will end up being completely different than I ever expected…

Welcome to The Curvy Elle : Blog and Vintage Shop (Plus Size)

California Girl in Red

This photo shoot is the last group I did when I was home for two weeks at the end of April. I sold the skirt in The Curvy Elle Shop before I had a chance to post this, but I figured I would still show the shoot.  (The Green Purse is still available for purchase!)
I love the colors in the pictures and the texture of my Dad’s backyard with the crazy overgrown ivy!

Not to mention the puppies! I love my dogs! They make life so much brighter and lovely! It is hardest in some ways to be far away from them because you can’t talk to them every day on the phone like you can with human family members.

From front to back: Lulu aka “Louie” (all red), Annie aka “Bitty Bits” (first black and white one),  Max aka “Maxie” or “Mr. Moo” (second black and white one, and only boy!), and last but not least in the very back is Daisy or “Daaais!” (red and white).

Re-looking through these pictures makes me happy–makes my day! The red skirt is so vibrant and cheerful! It’s amazing how a very basic skirt can be so vibrant and eye catching! I almost feel sad that I let it go, but hopefully it will bring the new owner happiness and joy while wearing it!

Happy 3-Day Memorial Day Weekend! Have barbeques outside, enjoy the sun, and RELAX!!!!

(BTW, Yes, I WAS twirling around in circles in the last pictures!)

Thanks Mom for the pictures!
