Central Park Kinda Day

May 30, 2012

After a very brutally hot and humid 3 day weekend, today was beautiful! It was cool enough to walk around and not feel like I was going to die. It wasn’t really muggy…. It was definitely the perfect day to make it to Central Park.
I was lucky enough to see a few of these little guys running around! They were not scared at all, completely tame.
I found a big bush of these pink flowers with these humungous bumble bees eating off of them! Once in a while you will catch a glimpse of a stray bee in New York, but I have NEVER seen SO many in one place here! It was pretty amazing! I got close and none of them bothered with me they were so enthralled with the flowers!

This red skirt (which I would almost call a burnt orange-red color) reminded me of the skirt in my “California Girl in Red” post from Sunday, so I had to get it! That skirt was great! I am happy I was able to find a similar one to add to the shop, since the first one sold.

Some days you need a little “communing” with nature… even if the city is five feet away from you! I can’t imagine how anyone could survive living in a city without some sort of park and nature in it!
Days like today are what makes New York Springs amazing! They make it worth dealing with all the crud!

Hello World!

May 27, 2012

Hi! I’m Laurel— I am the “Elle/L” behind The Curvy Elle. I am a 20-something, Californian born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area transplanted to New York City. I am a plus size or “curvy” girl who is living (and working!) in a world of size zeros.

I am currently following my dream—living and working as an Assistant Fashion Designer for a wholesale clothing company that has production right here in the good ol’ U S of A. We make Junior and Junior Plus clothing.

I did my undergrad schooling in NYC, but had the luck of graduating right when the market crashed. I had a hard time getting started in the Fashion Industry, so when I had a job offer back home I took it. I spent the next 2 years working and going back to Grad School. I have a restless heart, so when my feet started twitching I knew it was time for a change. From the day I left New York I knew it was just a matter of time until I came back.

Last September I moved back to New York to intern in Fashion Design and look for work. I spent about 6 months doing a multitude of internships and odd jobs until I was hired as an Assistant at my current position. I have been in it for the long haul. Now that I am settled in my job I want to add something new to my life.

Working in an industry that is so focused on appearance, it has definitely made it extra hard for me being plus sized. It takes guts of steal and strong self worth to make it. It may sound cliche, but I really want to make a difference in such a superficial industry. I want to show that there is substance out there and a large market for the “Curvy” woman.

This is how I came up with the idea of The Curvy Elle Blog and Vintage Shop. With this blog, I intend to show how trends can be translated for the Plus Size Woman and give ideas for creative ways to dress yourself. I have also dedicated my shop to sell my vintage finds for that woman. Ultimately, I have a general idea of what I want to do with this blog and shop, but I know that it will end up being completely different than I ever expected…
