Plus Size Healthy Living 2015

January 10, 2015

As mentioned in my “2015 Goals” post, one of my goals for this year is to “be healthy.” I have always been one who has advocated being healthy at any size. I have been a gym goer since my teens and on-and-off hard core into eating healthy. (Granted the eating healthy thing has fluctuated through the years.)

When I first started this blog I was into writing “Plus Size Healthy Living Posts,” but slowly I got away from this due to… life, ups and downs, etc. 2014 saw me both back into workout-healthy mode and also in the exact opposite. Granted, a lot of this was due to injuries and some of it, just because.

When it comes to working out, in the past, I have had a hard time understanding my body’s limitations. Yes, I can initially do that crazy exercise, but No, my body will end up hating me afterwards. I am slowly figuring out what physical activity I can do without having adverse affects on my body. I am also learning that, maybe, I have to look to what I’m putting into my body even more to feel better physically, mentally, emotionally, and intestinal-y (poo poo sensitive stomach). I’m finding that it can’t be one or the other —  it has to be a happy medium somewhere in-between.

So, I am starting this new year off right with a detox of sort in the form of a Whole30 program. Whole30 is a un-diet diet that you do for 30 days (or however long you wish to). You basically cut out all dairy, grains, legumes, sugar, alcohol, artificial sweeteners and preservatives, chemicals, nitrates, etc. You replace all of this stuff with meats, fish, eggs, vegetables, some fruit, and healthy fats (eg; olive oil, avocado, coconut out, animal fat). There are no regulations on calorie intake and you can eat what you need to stay full and have energy (no starving! yay!). Along with changing up your diet, you also work on your mental and emotional attachment to food and eating.

(Please note: this is a very broad overview of Whole30, you can find out more on the Whole30 website or by reading the book It Starts With Food: Discover the Whole30 and Change Your Life in Unexpected Ways.”)

I know that Whole30 is being promoted by a lot of people, and has become very “trendy.” But, that being said, I am on day 15 and am feeling great, have lost inches, and am also happier than I’ve been in a while. This is not about losing weight or “getting skinny” —  it’s about feeling good, in all senses of the word. My stomach is thanking me, my body is thanking me. I know I will never be “skinny,” (and I don’t want to be) but if I feel good, am able to move easily, and live a good life  — it doesn’t matter how it is accomplished. Healthy living can be done at any size, and you can most definitely be Plus Size and Healthy!

Stay tuned for more updates on my Whole30 journey and healthy living life!

2015 Goals (Personal & Professional)

January 5, 2015

2015_goals

Today, I am sick with a bad chest cold and have been at home not feeling good physically, but feeling good emotionally. I’m happy the holidays are over with, and even though a “new year” doesn’t really change things or give you a clean slate — it sometimes acts that way, or at least makes you feel that way. That’s all that matters anyway — right?!

Every year I like to make some Goals for the year. I hate the term “resolutions,” because it is setting yourself up for failure and it’s better to be loose about what you see for your year to come.  I figure, that these “goals” I set are not set in stone, but more of a guideline of things I’d like to possibly accomplish for the year (or more) to come. Here are my (personal and professional) 2015 Goals (in no particular order).

*  *  *

1. More Handmade Goods in Shop

I have always had a few handmade designs in The Curvy Elle Shop. I even added one of the brooches I made last year (I have more that I never added). This goes for my other shop, Elle Enfant, as well. Here are some current pieces in both shops:

2. Expand ‘Elle Enfant

My new children’s vintage and modern fashion shop, Elle Enfant, has had a great start this past year. I am having so much fun exploring and finding items for this new venture. In the coming year, I hope to add a blog/website for this shop. I also hope to add more to the shop in the form of more older children’s clothing (it’s easier to find baby clothes than older kid’s!), some (more) of my own designs/creations, and small vintage toys.

3. Be More Frugal

This goes for both my personal and professional finances (which are basically one in the same since I’m a small business). I have already started my way on this and hope to get better and make better choices in the coming year. It is important to me to stay on top of things.

4. Be Healthy

Last year I went back and forth with being healthy and being very unhealthy; and working out hardcore and having to lay low from injuries. I want to find a happy medium.  I have had a lot of digestive issues on top of everything. It is not about “getting skinny,” it’s about wanting to be healthy and feel good.

Right after Christmas, I made the choice to try out the Whole30 program. I had read about other people having success with it, so after buying (and reading!) the book (It Starts With Food: Discover the Whole30 and Change Your Life in Unexpected Ways”), I decided to give it a go! I am currently on day 10 and so far so good!

More posts to come on the Plus Size Healthy topic to come.

5. Personalize My House

In October, my boyfriend and I moved in together. I love our little house and I want to make it more our own beyond our furniture and “stuff.”

6. Travel

The main trip I took last year was a road trip to Utah with my mom. It was fun, but I would like to take a trip somewhere new this year. Go somewhere different, that I’ve never been before — even if it’s just somewhere new in California.

7. Explore My Local Area

Moving in with my boyfriend has also meant a slight change in area. I’m slowly getting to know my way around and finding places I like. One thing I really hope to find in the coming year is more local thrift shops. Yes, I can just go on Yelp or Google and find thrift stores, but that doesn’t mean they are any good. I want to find some special places. Places that are sort of secret, I can find good items, and they have good prices. I know they are out there, I just have to find them!

8. Do a ‘Pop-Up Shop’

Last year, I said I wanted to do another ‘pop-up shop,’ (previous ‘pop-up shop’) but never actually got around to doing one. I did one when I first started this shop, and have yet to do another (for multiple reasons). I am, tentatively, saying I’d like to do another one (or more!) sometime this year. I’m not sure how or when, but hopefully I will make it happen!

9. Revamp the Blog

I mean this very broadly.  I would like to get a new look for the layout. I have a lot of ideas for change in content beyond the blog — i.e.  creating partnerships with other blogs and businesses, guest posts, etc. I also want to revitalize my blog posts and ideas.
