5 Tips for Finding Your Individual Style

May 15, 2013

A lot of people out there have a really hard time defining their personal style or taste when it comes to fashion. I am all about being unique and picking and choosing when it comes to trends. Here are 5 tips I have come up with for finding and defining your own individual style!

1.  Shop

Anywhere and everywhere. Online, in stores, at flea markets… “Regular” sizes  and Plus. Know what people are wearing. Make it your business to know what people are wearing, then figure out what you like or dislike.

2.  Your Silhouette

Try things on. Even if you think it will not flatter your figure, you may end up surprised with what looks good on you! Remember: what’s the worse thing that could happen? You go “ewwwww” to something for about 30 seconds? Or you may end up going “Hot DAMN!” instead!

3.  Be Open & Receptive

To new colors, silhouettes, textures, print, and styles. As I said above, and I will repeat it again: you never know what you may surprise you!

4.  Find Inspiration

What tickles your pickle? Floats your boat? This is what will help define where you want to take your style.

Do you love vintage? Edgy? Rustic? Punk? The list goes on… but it all comes  down to what makes your “heart skip a beat!”

5.  Define Your Style “Rules”

Last but not least, put the above 4 topics to a tanglable idea. What do you like to wear? What will you absolutely NOT wear? What’s your target “look?” What are “your colors?”

Remember, this can change and will change. Your style and preference comes and goes and never should stay stagnant.

1960’s Nightie Reinvented + Sizing Musings

January 15, 2013

The thing about vintage and sizing is — you can’t look at the size.  Take this lovely little vintage 1960’s nightie: it is actually a “SIZE SMALL”! Yes, it was probably made to be worn on a smaller body and is supposed to fit a little longer…. BUT, it fits me how I envisioned it to look. So, here I am rocking it off!

Who’s to say what size a garment is? If it fits you, you like how it looks, can pull it off–THEN WEAR IT!

Added to the whole size and being vintage thing– silhouettes varied so differently depending on the era. We may wear a clothing item completely different than it was originally intended.  For example,  in the 1980’s the whole over-sized manly look was popular. Today, (generally) we wear clothing more form fitting. This means that sometimes, a larger size gal can fit in an item that was originally meant to be worn large by a smaller girl.

On top of the fit, sizing didn’t become standardized until more recently. Even with standardization of sizing, there are so many discrepancies between brands, manufacturers, etc. when it comes to sizing. How many of you out there are a different size depending on what retailer your shopping at?

Basically, my point is– don’t judge a dress by it’s size label. Hold it up to your body, try it on, think outside the box, and most importantly: if you love it–who gives a shit?!
