I added a chunky knit navy cardigan to The Curvy Elle Shop this week. It reminds me of old Portuguese fishermen and my grandfather (who was Portuguese and a fisherman–for pleasure, not for career, that is).
When I say Portuguese fishermen, the ones I’m thinking of are the old timers out in Half Moon Bay, CA. Those old men who were transplanted from the Azores Islands, wanting to capture a little piece of home in the misty moisty coastal town. Hidden away from the rest of the world through a path of windy roads running through the mountains–an island of it’s own in a sense…
My grandfather loved his cardigans and always had more than one at his disposal, but the NAVY colored one was his favorite. When it was cold out, he would wear his sweaters with a ski hat rolled up, so that it barely sat on his head. Smirk on his face, legs crossed, sitting in his la-z-boy chair, his little black dog on his lap… When I picture him in my head, this is the way I see him.
Some days it seems like yesterday that I walked into my grandparents house on any given day and I’d find him in the kitchen in his chair… Other days, it seems like a life time since then. I’ve changed, my family has changed… But, things like this sweater will always trigger memories of him.
